We are looking for highly motivated individuals for a postdoctoral position (TV-L E13) in a joint experimental-modelling project situated in the newly initiated lab of active sensing (Dr. Engelmann) at Bielefeld University (Germany).
The lab is embedded in the Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC, www.cit-ec.de). CITEC is focussing on key aspects of intelligent systems and their environmental/technical interactions.
Research in the project will focus on the sensory processing of active and passive electrolocation in fish, its neurophysiological basis, including computational and behavioural aspects. We specifically aim to understand how perception can be integrated with motor activity during electrolocation in order to decipher sensory input. As an initial step we will investigate how a well-described neuronal network of multiple topographic maps extracts spatial information based on an input that relies on temporal coding. Candidates will be involved in exploring the neurophysiological mechanisms of information transfer, tightly linking electrophysiological, behavioural, and theoretical approaches.
Applications of motivated, creative and independent applicants with a background in electrophysiology and/or physics/engineering and experience in advanced data evaluation techniques or, alternatively, in modelling of neural systems, are invited. Applications must include a CV, a brief statement of research experience and interests, a publication list and names of two referees. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is required.
Bielefeld University is an equal opportunity employer. Women are especially encouraged to apply and in the case of comparable competences and qualification, will be given preference. Bielefeld University explicitly encourages disabled people to apply.
Applications will be considered until the position has been filled and the duration of the position will be initially for 2 years. Please submit your documents no later than January 15, 2009. Please address your application and any queries to Jacob Engelmann (Jacob.Engelmann@uni-bonn.de).
