We are looking for a PhD candidate to study the neurobiology of bat social vocalizations, with an emphasis on the transcription factor FoxP2. This project is part of our ongoing research into the biological origins of human vocal communication, including speech and language, using songbirds and bats as model organisms.

Mutations in the FOXP2 gene cause specific speech abnormalities in people. We have shown that reduced levels of the protein during song development in zebra finches cause incomplete and inaccurate song learning. The FoxP2 sequence is highly conserved in most vertebrates studied, as are its expression patterns in the brain. Interestingly, bat species have much more divergent FoxP2 sequences, and this has been linked to the absence or presence of echolocation in the different species. Some bat species are known to sing mating songs and there is evidence that these can be learned. We are therefore investigating the neural substrates of social vocalizations including song and song learning, and the role FoxP2 might play in these behaviors in selected bat species.

We are seeking a highly motivated, independent candidate with a masters or diploma degree in biology or related fields. The project will involve field work, neuroanatomical and molecular techniques. The ideal candidate will have practical and theoretical skills in molecular biology, neuroanatomy and behaviour, ideally bioacoustics. Experience with statistical analyses as well as good English skills are required.

Applications should be received by July 15th at the International Helmholtz Research School 'Molecular Neurobiology'
