University of Heidelberg, Institute of Zoology Dept. of Developmental Neurobiology

PhD Project in Developmental Neurobiology

application deadline: not specified
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying axon growth and pathfinding in the mouse/chick embryo. In particular, we study the functional roles of cell adhesion molecules, cytoskeletal components, and intracellular signalling molecules in the development of the visual system. Our studies are basic research, however, ultimately aim at contributing to the development of therapeutic approaches to enhance axon regeneration (for details please see: http://www.zoo.uni-heidelberg.de/gep).

The PhD project will focus on the impact of selected proteins on the formation and navigation of axons, making use of a broad spectrum of techniques established in the group including molecular biology/biochemistry, micro-/nano-technology, in vitro and in vivo live imaging microscopy. We offer a well equipped department, supportive mentoring, a variety of on-campus-facilities (imaging centers, e.g.) and a stimulating scientific environment. Highly motivated candidates, preferentially with a background in (developmental) neurobiology, are encouraged to apply. Funding of the position (salary, consumables, meeting participation etc.) is available for three years.

For requests/application, please send your CV by email or contact directly Prof. Elisabeth Pollerberg (06221-546370) or Dr. Karsten Thelen (-546371).
