PHD OR POST-DOC POSITION AVAILABLE

One PhD or post-doc position is vacant immediately at the Konrad Lorenz Research Station in Gruenau, Upper Austria. We are looking for a highly motivated person to join our goose research group to investigate social factors affecting parasite burden and immune status in greylag geese.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
We are beginning to investigate parasite dynamics in a flock of free-ranging greylag geese. The work will include behavioural observations, faecal sampling for endoparasite monitoring and blood sampling to assess immune parameters. Additionally, experiments are planned in order to causally link social factors and parasite burden; the applicant shall conduct those experiments. We expect the applicant to analyze the result and disseminate these in peer-reviewed journals. Therefore, a sound knowledge in statistical analyses and writing scientific publications is essential.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have a master degree (or equivalent) in Biology or Veterinary Medicine and demonstrate an excellent academic record. The ability to do independent research and a strong background in behavioural biology and parasitology/immunology is required. Having worked with wild birds would be a plus.

POSITION AND APPLICATION
The job position is funded through an Austrian National Science Foundation (FWF) research grant for the duration of two years. Starting date is negotiable, but should ideally be the 1st of August 2010. Review process of applications will begin immediately and is open until the position is filled. Please send your application documents (CV, list of publication, short summary of your current research, a statement on your reasons to pursue a PhD, and two letters of recommendation)
