We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join our research team working on the interaction of evolution and ecology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön, Germany.

A PhD-position is available in our newly established, interdisciplinary research group ‘Community dynamics’. We work on different aspects of eco-evolutionary feedback dynamics and the main aim of our research is to address the ecological causes and consequences of evolutionary change on community dynamics and the maintenance of genetic variation. Using fast growing aquatic organisms (algae, viruses, rotifers) as a model system, we investigate evolutionary change and ecological dynamics simultaneously. To gain mechanical insight into these processes we apply functional genomics and mathematical modeling. The current project explores how food web and spatial structure affect eco-evolutionary feedback dynamics.

The ideal candidate is fascinated by evolutionary and ecological questions, independent and creative. She/he has a background in evolutionary biology, population or community ecology and has ideally worked with aquatic systems before. A MSc (or equivalent) in Biology is required. The institute offers a stimulating international environment and an excellent infrastructure with access to state-of-the-art techniques. The town of Plön is in the middle of the Schleswig-Holstein lake-district within a very attractive and touristic environment near the Baltic Sea, close to the university towns of Lübeck and Kiel.

Informal enquiries can be made to lbecks@evolbiol.mpg.de and have a look at our homepage: www.evolbio.mpg.de/comdyn. The position is funded for three years. Please apply by sending your CV, including the email addresses of two referees, and a letter of motivation to Lutz Becks (lbecks@evolbiol.mpg.de). Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer.
