Master Thesis Announcement

“Establishing genetic markers for pedigree analyses in giraffes”

Giraffe are one of Africa´s most charismatic animals. Recent research has shown that giraffe likely have more complex and preferential relationships than previously believed. In particular, it has been shown that associations between pairs of female giraffe may at least in part be driven by genetic relatedness.

Therefore, we, in cooperation with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and the University College Dublin, want to investigate whether giraffe are more closely related within herds than we would expect by chance, and also whether giraffe are less closely related in male-female preferential associations.

Therefore, we are offering an opportunity for a Master Thesis for a highly motivated student to establish nuclear markers for pedigree analyses. The applicant should have an interest in population genetics and experiences in standard laboratory techniques, such as DNA Isolation and PCR.
