The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) was founded 1817 and is a member of the Leibniz Association. SGN scientists from 180 nations conduct modern natural history research at 11 research institutions in six federal states. With a dedicated clean room, zoologists at the base in Dresden operate specialized infrastructure for the genetic analyses of museum specimens.

Senckenberg Dresden invites applications for a PhD position in a DFG-funded research project.

PhD Position in Evolutionary Genomics of Central Asian Hawkmoths (65%)

The SGN is searching for a talented and motivated applicant to join the working group of Dr. Anna Hundsdörfer within the framework of the DFG SPP 1991 TAXON-omics. The applicant is expected to be closely involved in the novel use of natural history collections through obtaining genomic data from historic museum specimens to study phylogenetics, speciation and hybridization in a hawkmoth genus (Lepidoptera).

Your profile:

  • Master/Diploma degree in Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics or a related field
  • Strong interest and proven skills in phylogenetics or bioinformatics of genomic data
  • Experience in New Generation Sequencing (NGS) and analysis of genomic data
  • Very good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Interest to be involved in expanding the work to morphological trait correlation of wing pattern elements

Salary and benefits correspond to those of a public service position in Germany (TV-L E 13, 65%). The contract could start December 1st, 2017 at earliest and will be limited for 36 months.
