PhD-position available at the University of Oldenburg

The research group “Animal Navigation” headed by Prof. Henrik Mouritsen in the Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences offers a PhD-position (½ E13 TV-L position) focusing on behavioral experiments and neuroanatomy. You will be working in a stimulating international environment, which aims to understand magnetoreception from the biophysics of electron spins via molecular biology and neuroscience all the way to the behavior of the complete animal. We primarily work on migratory birds.

You should

  • be interested in the area of animal navigation mechanisms and magnetic sensing mechanisms;
  • experience with behavioral experiments and histology would be an advantage.
  • experience in handling birds would be an advantage
  • have enough physical understanding to independently understand and manipulate magnetic fields;
  • be aware that a good Ph.D. project requires a lot of hard work and personal dedication;
  • speak reasonably good English.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in at least one of the focus areas and is willing and capable of acquiring additional skills in multiple disciplines. A masters level education in natural sciences is mandatory (must be concluded before moving to Oldenburg).

Our group is located at the University of Oldenburg, Germany and is part of several collaborative centres of excellence both nationally and internationally. These collaborations will give you access to a very wide range of superb modern equipment, techniques and expertise. Our working group is also member of the DFG funded PhD program “Molecular basis of sensory biology” and of the graduate school program “Neurosensory sciences and systems”, which both of the announced PhD students will have to take part in. Therefore, you will become part of a larger team working closely together on related questions. For more information about our group, see http://www.member.uni-oldenburg.de/henrik.mouritsen/
