The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) is a member of the Leibniz Association and is based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. SGN conducts natural history research with almost 800 employees and research institutions in six federal states. Within SGN, the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) explores the interactions between biodiversity, climate, and society.

Quantitative Ecologist PostDoc (fulltime)

The project aims at extracting information on the Ecology and Biogeography of plants, butterflies and birds via text mining techniques applied to German literature. The text mining is carried out by the project partner AG Texttechnologie in the informatics department at Goethe University.

The candidate is expected to manage the Ecology/Biology part of the project and to coordinate the cooperation with the other project partners. Furthermore, you support our second project employee in the implementation of project specific ontologies, and you will utilize the data produced during the project for scientific analyses (e.g. changes in community composition, abundances and distributions, in relation to potential drivers such as climate and land use change) and publications in cooperation with the project partners. The work will be in close cooperation with colleagues from Senckenberg’s Data and Modelling Center, the University library J.C. Senckenberg, and text mining experts from the AG Texttechnologie, Goethe University Frankfurt.

Your tasks:

  • coordinate the cooperation with the other project partners
  • manage communication with data federations, in particular the German Federation for Biological Data (GFBio)
  • develop/implement transfer of data generated in the project to data federations
  • support adapting vocabularies for plants, Lepidoptera and birds to the requirements of the project
  • closely collaborate with the text mining team of the AG Texttechnologie, and with the entomologist in our team
  • check the quality of data produced by developed text mining tools
  • utilize data produced during the project for scientific analyses
  • write manuscripts and publish results in international journals in cooperation with the members of the project team

Your profile:

  • M.Sc./Diploma/PhD degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Ecology, Biogeography or related subjects.
  • experience with biological databases and biogeographical analysis, e.g. Species Distribution Modelling
  • experience with at least one programming language in the context of data science, e.g. R, Python, C/C++" • research experience in interdisciplinary working environments
  • excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English

Salary and benefits are according to a full time public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13).
