The Department of Livestock Sciences of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL seeks (as of January 1st 2018, or on appointment) a highly skilled and motivated

Research Technician Entomology (100 %)

Duties and responsibilities

  • Maintenance of the breeding colony of Black Soldier Flies (BSF), Hermetiaillucens, including systematic management of concerted tasks such as puparium and adult colony tending, egg production, hatchery and nursery care, larvae fattening, harvesting and subsequent treatment
  • Active support and responsibility taking within scientific research on studying BSF biology, optimising colony management and process technology for insect protein extraction, as well as suitability/ sustainability assessments of insect based feed components for aquaculture and livestock feeding, including independent data collection and processing in tight collaboration with the scientific project management
  • Coordination and implementation of additional routine operational procedures, such as logistics of feed substrate supplies (e.g. residues of food production or other organic wastes), and preparations of feedstuff for standardised colony maintenance and experimental research, as well as servicing and keeping clean of the entire research facility and infrastructure, including installations, machines and experimental equipment


  • Education as technician and several years of experience in science and/or a scientific background (B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biology or similar disciplines) in the field of entomology with comprehensive practical know-how in (scientific or commercial) BSF/insect mass-rearing and processing
  • Strong reliability, independence, flexibility and ability to work in a team
  • Good physical constitution and technical skills, and no reservation to work with fly larvae and processing organic wastes
  • Driver’s licence (independent mobility required)
  • Language: fluency in German and/or English
  • Place of work: Frick (between Basel and Zurich, Switzerland)
