Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin) and the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V., a publically funded research institute of the German Leibniz Association, invite applications for the following position:

Professorship in Freshwater Science (salary grade W 3) and Director of IGB.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding personality to further develop IGB’s position as a global leader in freshwater science. The specifi c area of expertise could range from molecular to global ecology with a focus on freshwater biodiversity, limnology, fi sh biology and fi sheries science, ecological theory, microbial ecology, biogeochemistry, evolution, ecological physiology, chemical ecology, parasitology, ecotoxicology or freshwater conservation. Candidates working across systems, scales and disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply. The position opens exceptional opportunities to develop and guide disciplinary and interdisciplinary research within IGB and FU Berlin and in collaboration with a wide range of other universities and research institutes in Germany’s capital area and beyond. This includes involvement in the Berlin-Brandenburg Institute of Advanced Biodiversity Research (BBIB: www.bbib.org).

The ideal candidate is an accomplished freshwater ecologist with expertise in one of the above areas or a similar fi eld, as demonstrated by a strong publication record and other indicators of scientifi c standing. She or he is dedicated to guide an aspiring institute to further enhance its standing as a leading freshwater research institution with impact in science and society. The position requires excellent communication and scientific leadership skills. The successful candidate will be appointed as a civil servant or employee of the public sector (salary grade W 3). Applicants must hence meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).

The position is based at IGB’s main location in Berlin on the shore of Lake Müggelsee. In addition to the responsibilities as director of IGB, it involves reduced teaching responsibilities at the Institute of Biology in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy of the FU Berlin (one 2-hour course per semester). Courses are taught in English or German. The main working language at IGB is English, reflecting the institute’s increasingly international staff and students.
