Lab Technician position on electron microscopy

There is a vacancy for a temporary 2-year Lab Technician (code 1085) position at the Sars Centre in the research group headed by Dr. Harald Hausen. The position involves the application of state of the art electron microscopic methods in invertebrate organisms and is related to the project "Evolution of Cell Types". The position is funded by the Research Council of Norway and has a preferred start date of March 2018. The Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen, and is partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

About the project/work tasks:
The research group headed by Dr. Harald Hausen is working on the molecular and structural characterization of organ system and cell types in invertebrates to get insights into their function, development and evolution. Most relevant electron microscopic techniques in this context are 3D electron microscopy and correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM). The person being appointed to this position will be integrated in running research projects and trained by and work in close association with the group members. Major tasks will include sample preparation, sectioning, light, scanning and transmission electron microscopic imaging, image processing and adjustment and development of techniques. Working language is English and Norwegian.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The successful applicant should have at least a relevant bachelor level engineering degree or equivalent qualifications based on education and professional experience. Extensive and relevant practice combined with relevant formal training may compensate for insufficient formal education
  • Practical experience and a strong interest in life science scanning and transmission electron microscopy is expected
  • Prior experience in image processing is advantageous
  • Ability to work in close collaboration with others in a structured manner
  • The applicant must be able to communicate fluently (written and spoken) in English
