Horst Wiehe Prize
Information on the founder of the prize
Horst Wiehe (30.07.1924 – 02.08.2016)
On December 14, 1987, Horst Wiehe approached the German Zoological Association with the offer to donate the sum of DM 50,000 to support young scientists. In 1988, the then President Prof. Dr. Bernt Linzen, together with Mr. Wiehe, drew up the statutes for a capital foundation, from the proceeds of which the DZG has been able to award prizes to young zoologists for outstanding dissertations since 1991. The Horst Wiehe Prize is awarded every two years.
Horst Wiehe developed a special interest in flora, birds and insects as a prisoner of war in Scotland after the Second World War. He was particularly interested in ornithology and entomology and also published a number of ornithological papers, many in the Ornithologische Mitteilungen and the Journal für Ornithologie. He was a member of the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club. Horst Wiehe also donated generously to other biological associations. As a result, Horst Wiehe awards have also been made to entomological, ornithological and botanical associations.
